1) Choose A Cause
Need for good help in the community is a problem all year long, and not just during the holidays. You should encourage your employees to adopt an ongoing project that lasts all year long, such as helping at the local food bank. Designate a specific day every month where employees may participate in whatever philanthropic cause they choose as a group and encourage them to go volunteer as a team. By getting together regularly outside of the work setting, they will get to know each other better; and there is a natural bond that is created when people work together for those less fortunate.
2) Come Together In Times of Emergency
When the 2006 tsunami hit in Indonesia, killing over 100,000 people and displacing half a million others, Americans were sympathetic but felt powerless to help in many cases. Tap in on the natural concern your employees will feel in times of emergency (both local and global) by offering them opportunities to give concrete help. Contact reputable relief agencies to find out how you can help: you may be asked to put together first aid kits, box food, or any number of other one-time projects. Your employees will really pull together and jump at the opportunity to work together for a great cause.
3) Get outside Help for Ideas
You may want to consider hiring professional team builders who will be able to offer you a wealth of ready-made philanthropic activities that will help your employees learn to work together and contribute to their community in the process. Hiring professionals for team building philanthropy takes the burden off of management, and the activity is guaranteed to be successful and really make a difference.
Whatever you choose to do, if you are concerned with the ability of your employees to work as a team, help them to catch the vision by providing them with opportunities to do good as a group. The friendships they develop and the skills they learn will benefit everyone in the long run.
